How to Get from Heathrow to Central London: Train, Tube or Private Car
There are four main ways from Heathrow into central London. Each suits a different traveller – here is an honest comparison.
Heathrow Express
Non-stop trains to Paddington in about 15 minutes. The fastest way to Paddington, but you may need a taxi or the Tube from there. Fares are high if bought on the day; advance tickets are cheaper.
Elizabeth line
Direct trains through Paddington, Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Farringdon, Liverpool Street and on to Canary Wharf. Slower than the Express but cheaper, and it reaches more of central London without changing.
Piccadilly line
The cheapest option, taking about an hour to the West End. It is busy at peak times and has limited space for luggage.
Private car
Door to door, about 50 minutes to the West End in normal traffic, longer at rush hour. Economy Sedan fares start from about £46 to Westminster and £47 to Oxford Circus for up to 4 passengers; a Standard Van for 6 is about £80. The price is per vehicle and fixed before you travel.
Which to choose
- Travelling light, staying near a station: the Elizabeth line or Heathrow Express.
- On a tight budget: the Piccadilly line.
- With children, heavy luggage, or as a group: a private car – no changes, no stairs, and the fare is shared.
- Arriving late at night: a car, as trains run less often.
Booking a car
Enter Heathrow and your address on the booking form. Your driver waits in arrivals with your name; the first 60 minutes after landing are free and parking is included. See Heathrow transfers and the terminal pickup guide.
Popular destinations
Paddington, Chelsea, Canary Wharf and London Bridge.
Arriving with children
Trains and the Tube mean lifts, stairs and crowded carriages with pushchairs and suitcases. A car with child seats fitted in advance – free on request – is usually the calmest way for families to start a London trip.
