Airport Transfer vs Taxi in London: Which Is Better for Your Trip?
At every London airport you can take a licensed black cab from the rank, or you can book a private transfer in advance. Both are safe, licensed options. The differences are in how you pay, how you are met and how much space you get.
Price
Taxi: metered, so the fare depends on traffic and time of day. Transfer: a fixed price per vehicle agreed before you travel – for example, from about £59 from Heathrow to Oxford Circus in an Economy Sedan.
Meeting
Taxi: you queue at the rank outside the terminal. Transfer: the driver waits in the arrivals hall with your name and helps with your luggage.
Delays
Taxi: no booking, so delays do not matter – but neither is anything reserved. Transfer: we track your flight, and the first 60 minutes after landing are free.
Space
Taxi: black cabs take up to five passengers with limited luggage. Transfer: you choose the vehicle – sedans, vans for 6, or minibuses for up to 16.
Children
Taxi: child seats are not usually available. Transfer: child seats are fitted free on request.
Which to choose
- A taxi suits a short, spontaneous trip with little luggage.
- A pre-booked transfer suits families, groups, long distances, late arrivals and anyone who wants the price fixed in advance.
Watch out for touts
Only use licensed taxis from the official rank, or a car you have booked. Do not accept offers of a ride from people approaching you in the terminal.
Booking
Enter the airport and your address on the booking form to see a fixed price. See fixed-price transfers explained and London airport transfer prices.
Late at night
Taxi ranks can have long queues when several late flights land together, and some smaller airports have few cabs at night. A pre-booked driver is already waiting for you.
Groups and families
Because the fare is per vehicle, groups share one price. A Standard Van takes 6 passengers and 4 suitcases; a minibus takes up to 16 passengers and 10 suitcases. Child seats are fitted free on request – add the children’s ages in the booking notes.
