Karain Cave from Antalya: Visiting One of Türkiye’s Oldest Settlements
Karain Cave, north-west of Antalya, was used by people for many tens of thousands of years and is one of the most important Palaeolithic sites in Türkiye. It is a short, quiet excursion – about 35 km from the old town – and pairs well with Termessos.
Distances
- From Kaleiçi: about 35 km, around 50 minutes.
- From Antalya Airport: about 46 km, around 45 minutes.
What to see
A steep path with steps leads up the hillside to the cave entrance. Inside, the connected chambers show where excavations have taken place. A small museum at the foot of the hill displays finds from the site; many more are in the Antalya Museum.
Planning
Allow about an hour and a half for the cave and museum. The climb to the entrance is short but steep; wear good shoes. It is rarely crowded, which makes it a calm alternative to the busier coastal sites.
Combine with Termessos
Termessos lies in the same direction. Leave in the morning for Termessos, have lunch, and visit Karain in the afternoon – about a six-hour day from Antalya. See Termessos from Antalya.
Booking a driver
Book the outward journey on the booking form and choose “Return” with a time later the same day; both legs are paid together, with a discount on the return. The fare is per vehicle – a Mercedes Vito for up to 6 passengers – and shown before you pay. There is no convenient public transport to the cave.
Why it matters
Excavations at Karain have uncovered stone tools, animal bones and human remains spanning a very long period of prehistory, which makes it a key site for understanding how people lived in Anatolia long before the first cities. Visiting the cave after seeing the Roman sites of Perge or Termessos gives a sense of just how deep the region’s history goes.
For families
Older children usually enjoy the cave and the idea of Stone Age people living there; the steps make it hard with a pushchair. Child seats are free on request.
