Termessos from Antalya: How to Reach the Mountain City by Private Car

Termessos is unlike the other ancient cities around Antalya: it sits high in the mountains inside the Güllük Dağı–Termessos National Park, about 36 km from the old town. Its theatre looks out over peaks and valleys, and the walk through the ruins feels like a hike. A private car is the practical way to get there.

The road and the walk

After the national park entrance, a narrow road winds up through the forest to the upper car park. From there, a steep path leads up to the city. Allow about three hours on site, wear proper shoes and bring water – there are few facilities.

What to see

The highlights are the theatre on the edge of a cliff, the city walls, the gymnasium and the huge necropolis of rock-cut and free-standing tombs. The city’s position made it famously hard to attack, and you understand why on the climb.

Best time

Spring and autumn are ideal. In summer, the mountain air is cooler than the coast, but the climb is still hard in the midday sun – start early.
